  1. I'm pulling it for all on the green....depends on lie and slope for off green shots
  2. Looks better with the pin pulled!
  3. Typically don’t bother me to have in but some times I like to pull it out mostly on longer puts just in case it hits and bounces off. But most of the time it stays in !!!

I always leave it in unless the shadow of the flag is flapping on my golf ball or the flagstick is flopping around due to a bad cup liner fit. Since the rule change I've only had a couple of putts not drop due to the flagstick being in.

I prefer to pull it on anything that's "in range". Biggest thing for me is being able to visualize the falling in the hole, with the flag in it feels "obstructed".
  6. Out. Two reasons: (1) The hole just seems bigger to my eye when it's out; (2) my close-to-home data: I've had at least two putts this summer alone that I'm certain would have dropped had they not hit the pin that was left in.

That being said, for pace of play in casual rounds, I'll leave it in if that's the preference of that round's playing partners (except in a tournament... that sucker's coming out every time in a formal competition round!).

Pull the pin every time. Always have.
  8. Facinating data. Personally, I don't mind leaving the pin in in most every circumstance, especially on long putts.

With the twosome we were paired up with today we actually got to chatting about this. All four of us were relatively equal playing abilities. My playing partner and I agreed on short putts we prefer for the pin to be pulled, but don't mind it being in on long putts. I personally think not pulling has sped play up just a tad, and if I want the pin pulled on a short putt here and there, odds are someone has putted out and can just hold it while I putt my 3 footer quick. We've been playing for 20+ years. Our paired up playing partners have both been playing for less than 10 years, and prefer to have the pin in 100% of the times.

  9. I felt the same disbelief that another indicated about these numbers on the original post… I looked up the original study, and it turns out that the distance listed is the distance PAST the hole each put would have traveled (in other words, 9’ means that a person would have jammed it past the hole 9’). This helps the data makes more sense, and also helps explain why I still prefer the pin out—I’m more of “die in the hole”, rather than “back of the cup”, player. Original data post is at mygolfspy. Search for mygolfspy and “pin in or pin out” and it’ll come up.

I have always took the pin out whenever I putt or if I’m close enough to where it’s a make able chip where I would also pull the pin just because I feel like it’s so risky because if you hit the pin and it bounces out it’s a whole vibe killer for me because you know that if you took the extra second to take it out you could have been one stroke lower.

I feel like it’s always best to just take it out ‍♂️

Always out. I like to hear the sound when it goes in the cup.
  12. I am an 8 and prefer it out as much as possible. Even lag putting or chipping I will ask, when possible, for my partner to tend the flag. Of course, if no one is nearby I simply wont ask...of course thats when I hit the stick and see it roll out...oh well, thats golf.

I like to have the pin out unless I have a 20' plus downhill putt. If all others in the group prefer to keep it in, I will play with it in.

  15. It's all about tradition for me. Pull it.
