Does anyone else prefer to play the game alone occasionally? I love playing with others, but golf is also the perfect game for solitary play because it doesn't require teammates. My own preference for playing alone (when I was on the east coast) was usually late in the fall, after most of the crowds were gone. I liked to go out late in the afternoon on a crisp day, mid-week, as the shadows were getting long through the trees. It was a nice time to contemplate life, and get outside before the long, dreary winter set in. I usually had no one behind me, or ahead of me. I often thought about my dad, who passed away in 2002. He introduced us to the game of golf, and though he really didn't play himself, he instilled in me a love for it that l maintain to this day. In fact, he gave me my first set of Titleists when I finished graduate school. And though he didn't play, he would often walk the course with me when I visited, watching me play and talking about everything and anything. Good memories, all.

I played 196 rounds in 2019. I would say at least 80-90 of these were solo to start, though often times other friends from the course would hook up with me part ways into the round. Though I enjoy playing with friends, I also love to work on my game alone. I have a full all-inclusive membership at a great club and can usually go out alone most days towards the latter part of the day, so I take full advantage.

Also, I live next door to the club, so some nights in the summer after having played a round with friends earlier in the day, I will pop over after dinner and play till dark, solo, working on various shots or issues that arose earlier in the day. It's a great way to practice. These little practice sessions on the course are not counted as part of the 196 rounds this year. There's probably another 60 or 70 more times I was out there on the course alone hitting multiple shots from all sorts of lies. It's a great set up if you can make it happen.

I've been doing this for years. You'd think I'd be better by now!

I like to play as a single. Especially when I'm working on something with my swing.

When I was younger and working at a golf course, I would love to play alone after work. Now, golf is much Moe of a social sport for me and would probably not do it.

I enjoy playing alone from time to time especially when the seasons change. In spring everything is reborn, and in fall the colors in the Northeast are stunning. The last day I teed it up was the Sunday before Thanksgiving. When our 9 hole league finished up, we went in for a beer. I went out and played another nine alone. It was in the high 40's but beautiful day. The only living thing I saw was a coyote. I ended up having one of my best 9 hole efforts of the year.

I like playing alone on Sunday afternoons. Usually slow in the afternoons and I can play two balls.

I usually play solo after work. Playing solo is my form of therapy. Walking the course gives me the time to think about all the issues in life that need to be dealt with.

After working at the same course for the last 24 years, I get lots of opportunities to head out after work by myself. It always gives me a different way to look at the course I'm working at. Playing it, is different than working it. You get to see it from a players point if view. Also get to work on different things, especially the short game. Can't brat it!

I love playing alone, I go out at first light, by the time I'm making the turn, is when other people are normally starting.
I enjoy just being by myself and my thoughts.
  11. I enjoy solo as well. A great time to reflect, clear the mind of daily minutia, and re charge the battery. I love hiking, and golfing alone gives off that vibe. Great read about your dad and you, really enjoyed it.

Thanks Joshua B. I am convinced that dad would have taken up the game in his retirement had he lived. As a matter of fact, the last time we were together was for a quick nine in late October, 2002. The lasting memory I have of that day is when I made him finally hit a ball with the Titleists he bought me so long ago after finishing graduate school. It was the first time he hit a golf ball since I was five, when he introduced us to the game. Sadly, he was gone a month and a half later.

There’s benefits to playing alone , such as using more than one ball , and just working on things , but also good having someone to play with, so you have a little competition

Love playing along.. Can freely listen to music, smoke a cigar, pressure free, work on technique and play strategy!

I love playing golf alone. You're able to focus, play without distraction, work on particular areas of your game and absorb the course.

I play on my own late afternoon in the summer when the course is empty (millionaires golf) and play a number of balls or repeat shots per hole. I can really dial in my strategy when playing like this. In the winter heading out around midday is perfect as I am usually the last to be on the course.

Although playing alone is very individual, I find you socialise with other players doing the same or groups that see you out playing when you're out on the course or back in the clubhouse.

During the summer I like to play some rounds alone. It's off season down here at that time.

I enjoyed reading all your responses. I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys playing the game alone sometimes. Golf is truly a unique sport: it can be played alone, or it can be played in a group; it can be an individual sport, where you play against the course, or it can be a team sport, where you have opponents and teammates; it can be a sport that requires athleticism and physical strength, as well as cerebral acumen and forethought. What a cool game. Thanks for your thoughtful input guys (and ladies, should any respond after this gets posted!) Hit'em straight!

I like to play alone; I agree with it being therapeutic, or when I'm working on some swing issues.

If I head to the course to play solo late in the day I relish the time by myself. It's great to walk to your ball, plan the shot, and hit it. Rinse and repeat for 18 holes. If I get there and get paired up that's fine too! Same basic day but some socializing and being aware of another person (or persons). Either is fine to me...a day on the course is usually a great day!!

I don't mind playing solo as long as the pace in front of me is moving along.
Personally I enjoy a little company and competition...it's fun to play with like minded players.

    Company is always welcome,

I play about half of my 90-100 rounds alone because I'm at a private club and no one is a round during the week.

I enjoy it and usually can play 18 walking in about 2.5 hours.

I do break one rule which I think is ridiculous - I post my scores when I play alone. Yes I play by the rules - play it down, no gimmes and all penalty strokes taken.

I personally like the challenge of playing with friends. It brings out a little more competitiveness and makes me concentrate more. I like to practice on my own at the range chipping and putting greens. People tend to not bother me anyways when they see me looking down shaking my head and talking to myself. I love the game of golf and want to be as good as I can and I am my biggest critic. I am working on getting my son involved in the sport as well. I started at a young age and want him to fall in love with it like I did years ago.
