Do I really need a 3 wood?

  1. Thinking about the gap left between my driver (250 total) and U510 (225 total). I have been looking into a 3 wood, but get the feeling that I don't really need it and can manage the 1-2 times I come up short in a round with a solid approach shot.

    Thoughts, personal approaches?

I'd say you should be able to find some yardage out of that driver if you are hitting a hybrid only 25 yards less. Most players hitting a UDI or hybrid 225 yards should be able to get 270 out of a driver. Have you been fit for your driver?

I have posted this similar reply before, "go with what works for you". No other sport has the personalization as golf. You are only limited by 14 conforming clubs. You could go with four drivers, four putters, and six of anything else if you wanted. If you feel there is not a gap and you hit your utility better than you do a 3-wood, who are we to say you should do anything differently. I personally play 12 to 13 clubs only as i don't use long irons and manage my gaps with what i have. The other nice thing is that your set up only has to remain constant during a round. You can switch out clubs each outing based on course conditions, weather, or other factors. If you hit a 3 or 4 wood higher and want to use it to alternate with your utility iron, that is always an option. Mainly, have fun and enjoy the game.

Personally, I haven't carried a 3 wood in over 10 years. I have my driver and an utility 2 iron that plays like a 4 wood but more consistant for me. This leaves me a gap from about 290 to 230 and I don't see it as an issue.
  5. I would ask myself how often do I need a 3 wood? I have one, but I often swap it out for a U500 2 iron. The 2 iron doesn’t travel as far, but I’m a lot more accurate with it. Also I may only use my 3 wood 1-2 times a round when going after a par 5 that’s reachable in 2. I’m not one to use 3 wood off the tee either.
  6. I think the 3 wood is one of the hardest club to hit off the deck. I use a 4 wood instead. Then I have hybrid 19.
But in the end it is what works for you.
  7. Been a big fan of a 5 wood build 1” longer for years. Not many of us play on 7400 yard courses

3 woods sometimes are pretty fickle, and can be hard to hit off the ground. If you're satisfied with he make up of your bag, i say keep it that way!

Go for what you know is the best thing I can tell you. I drive around 235 and still only use a 3W maybe once. Even if I hit 250 the Par 5's aren't always reachable in 2 so I hit a hybrid to a yardage I like for a full or half wedge to the green. It all comes down to course management for scoring. Risk reward for me is trying to make birdie or par so I use my more predictable clubs for that. I hit my 16.5 3W around 210 but I can fade it or draw it. My 19 degree hybrid I hit with a small draw every time around 190ish so I choose that over my 3W most of the time.

But play your game with what gets you the best chance at scoring.
