Charles Howell III is teeing up a Pro V1 Yellow at the SONY Open

Charles Howell III, who has been among the most successful players over the years at the Sony Open in Hawaii, is opening 2020 with a new-look golf ball – Yellow. Howell, who was the first player to win with the 2019 Pro V1 at the 2018 RSM Classic, continues to play the same model, but now in color.

“I am all in!”, texted Howell when contacted by Team Titleist following his first round 72 – putting him in the middle of the pack — under difficult first round scoring conditions at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

“My 8-year old son Chase, who is really into golf, is even more excited than I am,” Howell said.  “He had a chance to visit the Titleist ball plant in Massachusetts a couple of years ago and he saw the Pro V1 Yellow golf balls being made before any players even saw them yet. He thought that was the coolest thing ever. He’s pretty much played yellow since he started playing golf so I guess I am going to have to start marking my balls when I play with him now.”

His interest in yellow was piqued at the QBE Shootout, a team format where he partnered with Bubba Watson. Watson was the first player ever to play Pro V1x Yellow in competition when it was introduced to tour players at last year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.

“I never really considered playing yellow until I teed it up with Bubba last month,” said Howell. “He plays a Pro V1x and I play a Pro V1, but to me, I was really surprised how much better it looked to me visually. I can see it a lot better and there is no glare. Most importantly, there is no performance difference between white and yellow. They perform exactly the same which gives me even more confidence than I already had.”

In addition to Watson, Howell joins Zac Blair (Pro V1x) and Rory Sabbatini (Pro V1x) among the players on the PGA Tour who regularly tee up a yellow Titleist golf ball.

Yellow has also experienced a lot of success on the PGA Tour Champions, where Kirk Triplett, Ken Tanigawa and Billy Andrade all finished among the Top 15 on the 2019 Charles Schwab Cup points list. The trio – all of whom play the Pro V1 Yellow - combined for three victories in 2019, with Triplett capturing the first-ever yellow win at the Hoag Classic in March, while Tanigawa earned the first major with yellow at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in May. Triplett also won the Pure Insurance Open in September in the first all-Pro V1 Yellow playoff with Andrade.
