How difficult is transition from 56*/60* to 54*/58*?

    I’ve played 52*/56*/60* for as long as I can remember. I just had an iron fitting and realized that my wedge gaps may be a problem.

    As my Titleist fitter pointed out, the wear on the 56* is heaviest, and it is my go to club around greens and certainly green side bunkers. The 60* is used for those delicate, short side shots that need to stop fast.

    Since the 60* is more a specialty club. I’m curious if a 54* or the 58* would play more like the 56*.

    FWIW, the fitting pointed me to the T100S. Given the lofts, my choices are 48*/52*/56* or 50*/54*/58*. I wonder if I’d really miss that 60*

    I also had used a 56 and 60 setup in wedges for quite some time but changed to 54 and 58 about 5 years ago and found the slightly lower loft combination much more suited to my game. By working on the range on the half and three quarter wedge swings with the 54, my proximity to the pin on those 40-70 yard shots that sometimes mean the difference between an up and down for a par or a bogey has improved significantly. For me, the 58 serves a similar role on more delicate shots around the green and do not miss the 60 degree wedge.

    I just completed my new wedge set up of 50°/54°/58° after always playing 52°/56°/60°. My gaps at the time were 5° in between my PW and GW. So I got a new set of Titleist irons (T100) and now my gaps are 4° apart and have no gapping issues.

    All you need to do is open that 58° a tad and you got a 60° haha. If you're worried about new gaps and distances, definitely recommend getting the new wedge distances figured out!

    I play the 100S irons. After the pw, I went 50F, 56M bent to 55, then 60L. 5 yard gaps work well for me. I can’t live without my 60. I’m a flop shot enthusiast lol

    I have switched back and forth a few times over the years. Currently using 54.12D and 58.12D SM9's. I use the 58 for most of the shorter bunker shots and when I need a lofted pitch. 54 comes into play more on longer bunker shots and normal chips or flighted short shots to the green. I was probably playing those same shots with the 56/60 combo. I seem to notice a bigger difference in changing bounce/grind than the 2 degrees difference in those clubs. The D grind has a lot of bounce but the relief you get on the grind by the heel allows you to really open it up and add loft when needed. Everyone's experience will be a bit different. Hopefully you get settled into what works best for you.

    Play the T100s with the P at 44 degrees. Then go SM8 in 48, 53, 57.

    In my CB620's I went 48, 52, 56, 60. I liked either set up.

    No issues wit the 53/57 combo. I can still open the face with the 57 for the flop or high loft shot but can also turn it down a little easier to drive a low skipper.

    it comes down to personal preference. Getting fit will help as well.

    My gapping is a little different; 50-54-60. I don't hit the 60 for distance anyway, so in a way it doesn't matter. My 56 no longer goes 100 yds, but I can hit the 54 that far. I can also throttle back on that club if I need to.

    Not that big of an impact. Obviously your distances will change a bit. But if you're going from vokey wedges to vokey wedges, the new distances shouldn't be hard to figure out. If you're going from a different set of 56/60 to 54/58 wedges, like TM to Vokey, then you'll see a difference on spin as well.

    T100S player . Using the 48 degree wedge , then 54/10S for a bit of bounce for powdery sand/ rough etc - then 60/4 L , which gives me 6 degrees in the 48 up. Was 46/50/56/60 but like keeping the 2 set wedges in the mix

    I game T200s currently. I went to the 54/58 combination with my last set of 718 AP1s, but I never carried a 60, I was using 52/56 prior.

    For the T200s, my fitter put me into a 54/60 combination because of more equivalent gapping with the 48 gap wedge that comes with the T200. I like it, for me. I have to remember to sometimes hit a little harder with the 60, but it's nice because I get more spin and less rollout. I feel like I have a little more margin for error.

    George I have the same set up T100S irons. My wedges are 50.08F, 54.10S and 58.08M. I use the 54.10 for all my chipping around the green. The 58.08 is wonderful for the little loft shots around the green. No problem with roll out. My buddy I golf with uses a 60 degree when we play around the practice green doing different shots there is no appreciable difference between our shots. I think it’s what you are comfortable with. I know I’m not changing my gaps.

    I've also considered making that change from 52, 56, 60 to 54/58. What keeps me from making that move is that I play the 620MBs with their standard lofts, thus my PW is 47 so moving to 54/58 will result in a 7 degree gap between my PW and 54...that's quite significant. My reason for considering this is to address the other end of my bag. With my Driver, 5i-9i, PW, 52, 56, 60 and putter always in the bag, making 11 clubs, I then move around between using 3 of the following: 3W, 5W, 4H, 3 iron and 4 iron. I have a strong distance overlap with the 4h and 4 Iron, and my 3 iron and 5 wood....but different flight characteristics. Ultimately, I'd rather have the extra wedge in my bag vs an additional long club...

    I also ply the mb’s with the standard 47* pw. My security blanket is my old 64* vokey I never go anywhere without it the last 12 years and play pretty much any shot with it. So the 52,56,60 has never made sense to me I never touched my 56. So I played a 54,58,64 for years but just couldn’t fill the gap I wanted between my pw and 54. I swapped it for a 52 and just carry the 52,58,64 the past few years. In normal conditions I just grab my 58 for anything 105 yards or less and my 52 for anything between 105 and 125. My 58 is an m grind so any flops, green side bunkers or something I want draw spin on I play my old 64. Obviously there are exceptions depending on circumstances and weather but wedges are all about feel and trust so the 52/58 eliminates the thinking for me and allows me to have the same yardages with the same club more often.

    50-58-64 is good for me.

    It all depends on the highest lofted wedge you want to play, your PW loft and how many wedges you want to play.
    Then its gapping between there. I have played the 50, 54, 58 but i never felt comfortable around the green. so i always went back to the 52, 56, 60 combo. I just feel so comfortable with that combo. Wedges are such a personal thing. iIts a disscusion you should have with your fitter to get comfortable and find out that works best.

    Like several others on here, I've adjusted slightly in recent purchases of wedges. With my T100s irons, I stuck with the 48 degree W from the set, but adjusted it to 49 degrees. My latest SM8's are 54/12D and 58/12D bent to 59. That gives me good gapping, with 5 degrees of loft between my wedges (P/44, W49, 54, 59).

    I initially got 50, 54, 58 on my new vokeys. I've returned the 58 for a 60. I don't hit my lob wedge full swing often and I wasn't getting the roll and spin I wanted on chipping with the 58. And when you open the face, you have to open it more because its stronger. So it really made no sense for me to gap my 54 and 58 to full swing. I use 50, 54, 60 because I want a 60 for chipping and 58 didn't cut it.

    I’m the opposite. I went from 60 to 58 and feel it’s much more versatile for me. I use the 58 easily twice as much as my old 60. If I need more loft I just open it a little. Also now use it from the fairway from 85 yards and in which I never used my 60 as the distance consistency was not there due to the loft. I would guess it’s 3 to 1 in how much I use my 58 vs the 60. Could have something from going to a better bounce for me. I love the 58. Also because it is a Vokey SM8.

    I think the 58 is a little easier to control than a 60. That said, I carry a 60 because the gapping works better with the other wedges I have in the bag.
