The Reluctant Ace

On a clear, warm day in late June, we were on our 14th hole of the day in a close match. Our opponents were one up after a net birdie on the par 5 4th hole (we played the front 9 second today). After our opponents hit their drives to the short downhill, par 3 over a pond, to a green, with the hole 120 yards away, I stood on the tee. There was a light breeze blowing toward us. I hit a pitching wedge well, it traveled over the flag and landed 4 feet past the hole, and then spun back It rolled in a soft area on the green and paused at the lip of the cup. As I turned in momentary disappointment to hand my club to the caddy, one of the guys yelled, it went in. So it hadn't stopped after all, just paused before it somewhat reluctantly went "plop."
I've been playing the game of golf over 40 years, and this was my first official hole in one. For the match, the ace drew us even, and we went on to win the next two holes and halved the last hole to insure victory.
The ace was more exciting than I expected. I hope I don't have to wait another 40 years for the next one.
