Never Saw It Go In
By John R On 10 September 2018
I've had the same tee time for the last 20 years with different playing partners throughout the years. Our tee time is at 6:40 AM on Saturdays and I normally show up at 6:39 ready to go. We normally BS with the starter for a little bit and as it had rained the night before I mentioned to him that it will be a good day for pin tracking with the soft greens. The handicaps of the guys I play with range from 12 to 28 and we normally play the par 3's for the large sum of a $1 a man that carry if there is no proxy. Many of the weeks we have carry overs for the whole round due to no one in our stellar group hitting the green. On this day as we approached the last of the par 3's on number 17 a safe bet would be that we were going to have another carry. The green on this hole is rather large but the way we play it you would think it was a postage stamp. As I stepped up to the tee I pulled out my Pro V1 with Z's or N's initial on it, not sure who Z or N is having found this ball on the course. I normally play ProV1's and finding them on this prairie style course isn't very difficult. It's like finding a $5 bill, someone else's loss my gain. I figure I'm about $600 on the negative side of this equation with my donations to others. The hole was playing 167 and I would not consider myself a long iron hitter so I'm hitting a 5 iron. At one time the 5 was best club in my bag but now it might as well be a 1 iron. Today however I striped it pure and from what we could see it looked like it was going to hit the green just couldn't see where it landed as it may have gone long. As we approached the green I could see the ball mark was about 15 feet in front of the pin and ball no where to be seen. I made the comment to one of my playing partners that it either has to be in the hole or I went way long off the back of the green. I've been playing for about 40 years and in that time have hit the back of the cup putting a divot in the hole and bounced out. I've also had one sit on the edge of the cup dangling precariously over the side as if to taunt me. Needless to say luck has not been on my side. I slowly walked up to the hole thinking that I'm probably long but might as well take a peek. Low and behold the Golf God's would not deny me again. In the hole, never saw it go in! Thank you Z or N, whoever you are please know that your ball will proudly be displayed on the desk in my office.
