On August 1, 2018, on #14 at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois, my playing partner told me the pin was 175 yards from the tee. That sounded incorrect to me, so I looked at the yardage plate on the tee, and figured the distance at about 158. Front pin, tucked behind a bunker, with a slight west wind in our face. I would usually hit an 8 iron to the front pin on that hole, but the flag looked more middle than front, so I choked down on a 7 iron. I generally draw the ball a bit more when I choke down, and sure enough, the ball did a beautiful little right to left turn, landed over the bunker on the fringe, and rolled right into the hole. I didn't actually see it go in, but knew it was tracking toward the hole, and could not see the ball anywhere on the green. My first hole-in-one in 48 years of playing golf. Epic! Only about 30 guys in the clubhouse, so the bar tab wasn't too bad!
