38 Years of Trying - In the Club Championship
By Steve G On 31 August 2018
I've been playing golf since I was 13 years old. This year I am 51 years old. In 38 years, I've come close, but never made the ace.
This year, on Sunday August 12th, I finally did it. I hit a pitching wedge (my 135 club), to 131 yards on the uphill 5th hole par 3 at Loudoun Golf & Country Club in Purcellville, Virginia. I didn't see the shot go in, but I knew I had made it. It was a pure shot. I texted my wife and friends from the tee box that I thought I had aced 5.
A couple of thins made this really special:
- This was the 5th hole of my semi-final match in the 3rd flight Club Championship. I went 4 up through 4 holes with 4 straight pars. The ace put me 5 up and 2 under, a lead I would never surrender. I won the match 6&5 on the 14th hole.
- On my way out for the match in the morning. I told my wife Kelly that I was dedicating my performance to my love for her. That's the only time I ever said anything like that to her. I made my first lifetime hole in one for her. That was the statement I was hoping to make. I love my wife.
I had been concerned for the last 10 years that Kelly would make her hole in one before I did. I always joked that if she did, our marriage would be over. She should pack and leave the house -- a joke of course.
But I like to think that one perfect shot both won my match AND saved a marriage that I'm very lucky to be in.
Later that day, I entered the "19th hole", our bar and lounge. To be greeted by the cheers and chanting of my name was unforgettable.
An incredible highlight to an incredible summer. A perfect moment. My first hole in one was everything I could have ever imagined and more.
I was proud to see that yellow Titlelist, a black #2 finally in the hole.
Thanks team Titleist for making me the perfect ball for the perfect shot!
