The first image is what I call “Torrey Pines Edition” with 46-50-54-58-60-64. 2nd image is my wedge spares. For 3 years 52-58-64 worked (SM9 54-10S and 60-14K with PM Grind 64/10). When I played Torrey Pines in 2018 my wedge setup was 50-57-64 plus it started my use of K grind for sand; big mistake was bending an SM6 60-12K to 57 because the hosel snapped. I played a few rounds earlier in the year with 54-10S and SM6 60-14K (52-58). I can go “traditional” by replacing the 50-08F, 56-12D and 60-14K with 54-10S and 58-12D (52-58 lofts)

Also bought back an SM10 58-12D and set the loft to 56*. I also set the 60-14K to 58*. So I have a “traditional” set of lofts (46-52-56-60-64. The 60-14K will work for my “carry bag”.
Golf is also a game of “process improvement”

Yesterday I spent some time at the range with my 816H1 and TS2 27 hybrids and bottom line was the 816H1 was more consistent; consequently returned the TS2 under the “90 day playability guarantee” and got an SM10 56-12D that I set at 54.

Since the beginning of 2023, my iron setup had been 716CB 7 iron (32*) and MB 8 iron (39*). My wedge setup was basically 46-10F, 54-10S (52*) 60-14K (58*) and PM Grind 64. Wanted to see what the hype was about D grind and T grind last year. For me, 60-04T is “nice to have” for a couple courses with rather hard green side bunkers. 60-12D and 60-14K bent to 58 were about equal in soft bunkers but the K grind is better on firm lies.

In April, the fitter/repairman at Fairway Golf talked me into a slightly used 58-06K and it worked pretty well in a wide variety of conditions. I recently upgraded to SM10 chrome for 46 & 52* (again, 54-10S). Purchased a 60-06K and bought a 58-12D (set it to 56* for a “traditional” 52-56-60 wedge setup).

Low bounce K works fine for a wide variety of conditions but standard K grind has a slight edge on thick grass. T grind is better off hard lies and open face shots. D grind’s advantage vs K grind is flop shots and full swings.

Any rate, took a 50-08F (keep one handy because it is “nice to have”), the 54-10S and 56-12D hitting various practice shots. Spacing was pretty tight (7 yards between the 50 and 54 lofts. Where the D grind clearly won was open face shots and it actually beat the S grind on a full swing by about a yard.

What’s in the thumbnail approaches my wedge makeup of 2013 (the “break 80” setup). I had an AP1 PW, SM4 54-11M, 58-06L and 64-07T.

50-08F is primarily full swing shots and longer pitches. 54-10S (52*) works better on long bunker shots plus is good for chipping.

I also have an SM6 60-12K (58*) that I played a few rounds carrying the bag. The 60-06K is a good carry bag club too.

I also have my dad’s golf bag (975 driver and 5W with Apex Plus 4-L; I have the 50-08F, 58–12D and 60-06K in place of F-S-L wedges) for the “traditional” 52-56-60 setup. I also paired the 54-10S and SM6 for the “carry bag”.

RE: Recommended Lofts
I put the lofts back to stock on the 60-14K and 60-04T. For the possible full shot between 110-115 yards, you'll always have the situation where you either have to step on one or take something off. It happens often with wedges, but also in your regular irons. As for not being able to hit a 60 degree wedge, it shouldn't be much different than hitting a 56. But a lot of 60 degree wedges have very little bounce and that can make them difficult to hit. You can find them with higher degrees of bounce. You make want to use the Vokey wedge selector that will pick your wedges based on your swing as well as the type of courses you typically play.

RE: Recommended Lofts
My yardages are almost identical to yours, but my set up is as follows: PW 46* (125 stock) , GW 50* (115 stock), SW 54* (90 stock) , LW 58* (75 stock).

I use my 54* almost exclusively around the green and for full shots up to 90 yards. The 58* only gets used when I have to get up in a hurry or flop it - maybe twice per round. I had a 60* as well at the beginning of the year, but found that I could do everything with the 58 and sold it to a buddy. I also hardly use my 54 and 58 for full swings; if I need to hit a 90 yard shot I'll take my 50* or my PW and choke down or open them up a little - I have a hard time not blading the short shafts.

I've gotten pretty good with the 54 and use it for a variety of shots and yardages. I picked up the 50 last year off the shelf and didn't pay attention to the shaft weight - it's a 120g whereas everything else in the bag is 105, so it feels like swinging a telephone pole. I kind of it hate it and can't wait to dump it next year when I replace all my wedges after getting properly fit.

I guess I'd advise this - find what works for you! The 4* offsets work pretty well for me (until they don't) and give me pretty good gapping. I haven't been fitted for wedges and have played with various lofts over the last couple of years to settle into this set up. Ideally, you go get fit - if not, play around and see what best suits your game.
The 54-10S has worked well for over 3 years (I used SM9 until recently) and it is more versatile against 50-08F, especially for long bunker shots. Played the SM9 for 3 years. I played 50-08F as a pitching wedge with 58-08M as a sand wedge between 2014-2020; switched to K grind actually in 2017 and alternated with M grind. Went back to K grind after COVID because the layouts at my home course have softer bunkers. One course I play has rather firm bunkers but the areas around the greens have thick grass so K and T grinds work. www.titleist.com/.../gh951dz7yvmjyjkupge8

RE: Recommended Lofts

The attached image is the “whole kitchen sink”

Iron lofts for my thumbnail are 39-46-53-58-64. 60-14K and 60-04T at 58* for high-low bounce options.

I’m evaluating the 695MB 8 iron vs the T100S 9 iron and the Wedgeworks 60-06K vs the other two.

I’ve been using an SM9 54-10S as a gap wedge for the past 3 years. I seem to fare better with 53* loft using the SM10. I previously used an SM9 48-10F bent to 46. I fare better with SM10 46-10F. Been using K grind as a sand wedge since 2017 (I have another SM6 60-12K at 58* in reserve; I broke the hosel on the one I used at Torrey Pines). I’ve been tinkering with 58-12D and 60-06K since the upgrade to SM10 recently; I traded in a TSR1 7 wood because the 18 and 23 fairways are a winning combination and put the SM10 60-14K in; it fared much better vs the D grind overall so I returned the latter and got a 60-04T.

Low bounce K by itself or K and T grind work well. The T grind works slightly better off tight lies vs low bounce K; standard K grind is better slightly vs low bounce K on soft lies. www.titleist.com/.../gh951dz7yvmjyjkupge8

RE: Recommended Lofts

These are what work and I like the bounces. The 60-06K and Phil 64/10 are stock lofts. I could take a 48-10F in place of the 50-12 but feel more comfortable with the shorter length of the 50-12F. About 3 years ago found that I do better for long bunker shots with a 54-10S bent strong vs a 52-08F. Playing a 58 wedge bent to 56 or a 60 wedge bent to 58 has been something I have felt comfortable with for probably 10 years. I used a bone stock 58-08M as a sand wedge until 2017. For the most part, have been using K grind bent 2* strong since then. K grind and D grind are versatile.

Low bounce K as a 60* wedge is the answer for me. It beats T grind and L grind hands down for versatility. I've had success in the past with the older 54-11M and 54-10S. My SM4 line up was 50-08F, 54-11M, 58-06L and 64-07T. Worked fine for the courses I played. After 2018, played courses with deeper bunkers that had fairly soft sand (Riverwalk Presidio, Torrey Pines). Attached is my Vokey setup.www.titleist.com/.../r8oo8m8c6j9kjq1jjmbb

RE: Recommended Lofts
The MB 8, 46-52 on the PW and GW has been working for a year and a half. The attached image is a pair of pristine 695MB heads. Plan on doing a head change with the 910S on the 9 iron and building the 8 iron with an S200 shaft. I’ll have my fitter set the lie angles and lengths as I did before on my old 695M and swingweight them for D2-D3. 38-42-48 for 8-PW will tighten things up.
The 716MB won the shootout between it, Apex Plus and T100S 9 irons. The Apex is a standard loft. The MB is 40* and the T100S is 39*. All are same shaft length and lie angle.

My wedge gapping is 44-48-52-56-60-64. Is that “traditional” or what? I set the lie angle to 65 on the 46-10F (44*) and 65.5 on the 50-12F (48*). I walked off the gaps.

Been doing some pretty intense wedge practice getting the SM10s zeroed in (the 46-10F is an SM9 and a go-to). Also had a couple good “sneakies” last round.

In reserve I have a Wedgeworks 58-06K and SM6 60-12F (58*).

I have a couple pristine 695MB heads that should be here today. I will set up the 8 iron the same lie and length as the 716MB but with an S200 shaft and have it swingweighted. The 9 iron is a simple shaft swap and a lie angle set. The stock lofts are 40-44 but I played my MBs at 38-42 before. They’ll swing exactly the same (1/4” length difference but same lie angle).

I gamed 695MB for 3 years. For 2023 my iron setup had been 716CB 7 iron (32*) and MB 8 iron (39*) with 46-52-58-64 as wedges.

Between 2018-2020 played a Vokey 46-10F bent to 44 in place of a 9 iron. Got the 695MBs just before COVID. Played 48-56-64 (alternating between set wedge and 50-08F).

What’s been constant is 46-52-58-64 since 2021. 54-10S (52*) is better for long bunker shots vs 50-08F.
