Pro V1 loyalist Jiyai Shin leads 1-2-3 Finish for Titleist Golf Ball Players at Mizuno Classic
Pro V1 loyalist and World No. 1 Jiyai Shin shot a bogey-free 6-under 67 Sunday to win the Mizuno Classic and lead a 1-2-3 finish for Titleist golf ball loyalists.
The 22-year-old finished the three rounds at Japan's Kintetsu Kashikojima Country Club at 18-under 198, two shots ahead of Pro V1x loyalist Yani Tseng.
Pro V1x loyalist Stacey Lewis, who shot a tournament-best 8-under 64 in Round 2, finished another shot back in third.
Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the limited-field Mizuno Classic with 36 players, more than all other golf balls combined. Of the 11 players who finished among the top 10 and ties, nine trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.
"It feels good to win… I am going to take it easy for the next couple of weeks and then head to LPGA Tour Championship. I want to play well there because the Tour Championship is the last tournament of the year," said Shin.
"If I have good play there it will make a warm winter."
For the event, Shin (2), Tseng (3) and Lewis (1) totaled just six bogeys. Shin made her two bogeys in an opening-round 65 that also featured nine birdies, including four-in-row to start the tournament.
It was Shin's eighth-career victory in just over two years as a full-time LPGA member.
Shin's final-round scoring average for her eight victories is an impressive 67.25. She also closed in 67 to win the Evian Masters in July.
In 2010, Titleist golf ball players have recorded 135 total victories across the worldwide professional tours, over 100 more than the nearest competitor with 23:
• SUNSHINE TOUR: Pro V1x loyalist Warren Abery also found the winner's circle Sunday at the South African Sunshine Tour's Nashua Masters, making two birdies and no mistakes over his final nine holes.
Abery closed in 1-under 69 for a 13-under 267 total, two shots ahead of three players including Titleist Brand Ambassador Oliver Bekker.
Titleist was the top golf ball choice at the event with 100 players, more than all other competitors combined.
The victory was the sixth of Abery's career. Abery, who took four months off this due to the birth of their daughter, also won the Nashua Masters in 2006.
“I have come back feeling so relaxed, and understanding that there is more to life than golf,” he said.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Pro V1 loyalist Bernhard Langer tied for third at the Champions Tour's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship to win the season-long Schwab Cup points race and a $1 million annuity.
"Looking back, it's been an unbelievable year. It really has," said Langer, who earlier this year won the Senior British and U.S. Senior opens in back-to-back weeks. "It's just sinking in because I've achieved a lot of my goals. I've won two majors. I've won the Charles Schwab Cup, won the Money List again, might end up Player of the Year again. It's hard to do that year after year."
Langer was one of 23 players in the limited-field event that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than seven times the nearest competitor with three. Of the 11 players who tied for 10th place or better at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, eight trusted a Titleist golf ball for their success.
Titleist also was first in Hybrids (9), including three new 910H hybrids in play; Iron Sets (9); and Sand, Lob and Approach Wedges (23); and Putters (10).
• WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: In his first week as the No. 1 player in the world, Pro V1x loyalist Lee Westwood finished second by one shot, narrowly missing a 25-footer for eagle on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.
Westwood was one of 45 players in the field that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than four times the nearest competitor with 10. Titleist also was first in Hybrids (18), including four new 910H hybrids in play; Iron Sets (23); and Sand, Lob and Approach Wedges (59).
"I made two bogeys during the week and none on the weekend. That's pretty good after three weeks off hardly hitting the ball," said Westwood.
Pro V1x loyalist Luke Donald tied for third, while Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy finished fifth.
• AUSTRALASIAN TOUR: Titleist was the golf ball of choice at the WA PGA Championship with 76 percent of the 142-player field, including 11 of the 13 players who finished among the top 10 and ties.
