Vijay Singh Wins Shell Houston Open |
Fairhaven, MA (April 26, 2004) – It took an extra day, but Vijay Singh fired a final round 4-under par 68 to capture the Shell Houston Open for the second time in three years. Singh, who relies upon the Titleist Pro V1x for his success, topped Titleist Pro V1 loyalist Scott Hoch by two strokes to become the second two-time winner on the 2004 PGA Tour. Singh captured the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February and joins Masters champion and Titleist ambassador Phil Mickelson as the only multiple winners this year.
With inclement weather suspending play three consecutive days, the Shell Houston Open did not finish until Monday. Singh, who opened with a 74, fired a second round 66 that equaled the low round of the tournament. He did not record a bogey over his final 51 holes of play and finished at 11-under 277. It marked his 17th career victory on the PGA Tour and his sixth top 10 finish of the year. Scott Hoch closed with a 5-under par 67 to finish solo second at 9-under 279, marking his second consecutive Top 10 finish. Singh’s victory is the 12th for Titleist players through the first 17 events on the 2004 PGA Tour, 10 more than the nearest competitor with 2.
PGA European Tour
Christian Cevaer (Pro V1x) earned his first career victory on the PGA European Tour with a one shot win at the Canarias Open de Espana. Cevaer, who started the final round two strokes behind the overnight leader, fired a 1-under par 69 on Sunday. He was aided by two eagles on the day, scoring a 2 on the par 4 first when he holed out from 137 yards, and secured the lead for good on the 16th hole when he eagled the short par 4 with a wedge from 53 yards out. Cevaer's win marks the 6th by a Titleist player on the 2004 PGA European Tour, twice as many as the nearest competitor with 3.
Champions Tour
Hale Irwin (Pro V1) earned his 39th career victory on the Champions Tour with a one stroke win over Gil Morgan (Pro V1x) and Gary Koch (Pro V1) at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. Irwin, who missed the previous four events with a back injury, shot a final round 1-under 71 to finish at 11-under 205. Irwin's victory marks the fifth consecutive win by a Titleist player on the 2004 Champions Tour.
Canadian PGA Tour:
Eric Compton (Pro V1x) captured his second career victory on the Canadian PGA Tour with a three-stroke win at the E-Loan Central Valley Classic. Compton fired a final round 4-under par 68 to finish at 15-under 273. Titleist players have won each of the first four events on the 2004 Canadian PGA Tour.
